A Different Kind of Taekwondo

At SISCOE Academy, Taekwondo is taught as a complete martial art. That means powerful technique, practical application, discipline and conditioning, rooted in traditional Taekwondo.

Many programs today build their curriculum around the point-scoring rules of modern competition. That's a legitimate path, and competition has a real place here too. We simply start somewhere else: real skill first, so that whatever a student does with it, in a tournament or in everyday life, rests on a full martial art.

A lot of people want to learn how to kick and punch. Far fewer want to spend their evenings getting kicked and punched.

Students learn legitimate kicks, punches, strikes, attacks, counters, movement and defensive skills. What they don't do is routinely hit one another to learn them. Contact is introduced when a student is specifically training for competition. The same approach applies to children and adults.

Like any physical training, Taekwondo still carries some risk. No-contact doesn't mean risk-free. It means you're not trading strikes with a partner as part of every class.

Taekwondo for Kids in Montréal

Most parents aren't looking for a future champion. They want a child who carries themselves with a bit more confidence, listens a bit better and handles themselves well when no adult is watching. That's what we work on, every class.

Children training Taekwondo together at SISCOE Academy in Montréal

Confidence

Earned, not handed out. Children build it by learning something difficult, performing it in front of others and watching themselves improve, one belt at a time.

Discipline

Listening, following instructions, repeating a technique until it's right. The structure of a traditional class builds habits that come home with them.

Awareness

Noticing what's around them and recognizing when something isn't right. For children, self-defence starts with paying attention.

Respect

For instructors, for training partners and for themselves. In traditional Taekwondo, respect is practised in every class, not just talked about.

Children can begin as young as 3, depending on readiness.

We have 3-year-olds training at the Academy right now. Some young children are ready; others need a little more time, and that's normal. At the free evaluation, Grand Master Yves Simard assesses whether your child is ready to participate successfully, and tells you honestly.

Adult Taekwondo in Montréal

Some adults trained as kids and stopped. Some have wanted to start for years but never liked the idea of getting hit. Both are welcome here, from complete beginners to advanced black belts.

Confidence

The quiet kind that comes from knowing you can handle yourself, built one class at a time.

Awareness

Reading your surroundings and recognizing trouble early. The foundation of self-defence, and useful well beyond it.

Flexibility

Kicking well demands it, and training develops it. You don't need to be flexible to start.

Mobility

Stances, footwork and kicks take your body through ranges of motion most adults stop using.

Real Martial Arts Skill

A complete curriculum, from poomsae to throws and joint locks, taught by Hall of Fame instructors.

Striking Without Routine Contact

Learn legitimate kicks, punches and strikes without spending your evenings absorbing them.

A Complete Martial Art

Not just kicking drills. Every student trains across the full Taekwondo curriculum.

Poomsae

Traditional forms: patterns of technique that build precision, balance, power and focus.

Sparring

Applying technique against a moving partner, with routine training kept no-contact.

Self-Defence

Attacks, counterattacks and the awareness to avoid trouble in the first place.

Breaking

Putting power and precision to the test on a real target.

Throws & Takedowns

Off-balancing an opponent and bringing them to the ground.

Joint Locks

Control techniques that work through the body's joints.

Striking

Kicks, punches and strikes taught for power and practical application.

Conditioning

The strength, stamina and flexibility that make technique work.

Self-Defence Starts Before the Fight

True self-defence is being aware and responding to the environment before the environment responds to you.

Read your surroundings

Know where you are, who's around you and what's normal for that place.

Recognize problems early

Notice what doesn't fit while there's still time and distance to act.

Respond before it escalates

Move, leave, speak up or get help before a situation becomes physical.

Understand the environment

Exits, obstacles, space and people: the setting shapes every good decision.

Physical technique is one part of self-defence, not all of it. Our students learn attacks and counterattacks, including powerful striking techniques. They also learn that the best outcome is usually the one where those techniques were never needed.

This isn't about fear. It's about awareness, preparation and knowing you're physically capable if you ever have to be.

If physical action becomes necessary, people fall back on what they've actually practised.

Train Traditionally. Compete Confidently.

Competition is available and encouraged for students who want it. Students who train for competition receive competition-specific preparation, including contact when appropriate.

What competition doesn't do is dictate the curriculum. Students who step into a ring do it with a complete martial art behind them, coached by Grand Masters who have won at national, Pan American and world level.

Taekwondo FAQ

What age can children start Taekwondo?

Children can begin as young as 3, depending on readiness. Readiness varies a lot at that age, which is why every new student starts with a free evaluation.

Is my 3-year-old old enough?

Possibly. We have 3-year-olds training at the Academy right now. Not every 3-year-old is ready, and that is completely normal. At the free evaluation, Grand Master Yves Simard will assess whether your child is ready to participate successfully and tell you honestly.

Do you teach adults?

Yes. Our Taekwondo program is for kids, teens and adults, from complete beginners through advanced black belts.

Do kids and adults get hit during class?

Routine training is no-contact between students. Students learn real kicks, punches, strikes, attacks, counters and defensive skills without routinely hitting one another. Contact is introduced when a student is specifically training for competition.

Is the program no-contact?

Routine training is no-contact between students, for children and adults alike. Like any physical training, Taekwondo still carries some risk, so no-contact does not mean risk-free. It means you are not trading strikes with a partner as part of every class.

Can complete beginners join?

Yes. Classes are open to everyone from complete beginners through advanced black belts. Placement depends on age, size, experience and skill level, which we look at during your free evaluation.

Can experienced black belts join?

Yes. Advanced students and black belts are welcome. Your experience and skill level are taken into account in how you train with us.

Are classes taught in English or French?

Both. Instruction is bilingual, in English and French, and classes can be taught in both languages depending on the students in the class.

Can students compete?

Yes, and we encourage it for students who want to. Students who train for competition receive competition-specific preparation, including contact when appropriate. Competition is part of the path for those who choose it, but competition rules do not define the whole curriculum.

What style of Taekwondo do you teach?

Traditional Taekwondo, taught as a complete martial art. Our roots include Jidokwan, and our training draws on a mix of kwans (the original schools of Taekwondo), with an emphasis on powerful technique, practical application, discipline and conditioning.

What does Taekwondo training include?

Poomsae, sparring, self-defence, breaking, throws and takedowns, joint locks, striking and conditioning.

Do I need to be flexible before starting?

No. Flexibility and mobility are things Taekwondo training develops. You do not need them before your first class.

What happens during the free evaluation?

You meet Grand Master Yves Simard, who looks at age, size, experience and skill level to see where you or your child fit. For young children, he also assesses whether they are ready to participate successfully. After that, the decision is yours: join, take an optional one-week unlimited trial for $35, or think it over.

How much does Taekwondo cost?

Pricing is the same at every age: $35/week for 1 class a week, $39/week for 2 classes a week, or $49/week for unlimited classes. Family discounts and an active-referral program can reduce that further, and every new member receives a complimentary dobok.
